Practicing Pilates at
MOVE

MOVE | the studio approaches the Pilates methodology with respectful regard for its founder and the originating repertoire along with the benefit of our ever-evolving knowledge and understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology, and musculoskeletal health and the impact it has on every aspect of our lived experiences.

Practice sessions and classes are formatted around spinal mobility and stabilty meaning that the point of an exercise is to flex, extend, rotate, laterally flex, or maintain a neutral spine while the limbs perform another assigned task.

Every exercise is executed in alignment with its design and intent. MOVE approaches the body's physical capabilities and limitations in equal and opposite ways: either via existing access to movement or restrictions to accessing movement.

I embarked on my teaching bailiwick in 1998 earning my comprehensive certification in the Stott system of Pilates, and in 2006 as a teacher-trainer in the Pilates Academy International system.

My background ranges from commercial gyms (Equinox Fitness Clubs), boutique and dance studios (ID Pilates, Kinected), and academic institutions (Barnard College, Ethical Culture Fieldston School), to name a few.

Ellen Shadle, Owner/Director

My movement journey began at around 5-years old with a gynmastics program at the local Y that lasted another 10 years when I pivoted to dance. I trained and performed in jazz, tap, ballet, and modern through college and made the pilgrimage to New York City to pursue a professional dance career. I was introduced to Pilates when overtraining was taking its toll and I needed a way to cross-train in a way that supported and enhanced my techincal dance practices. From my first mat class in 1996, I knew I had found the path to staying as healthy as possible given the rigors and demands of the dance form.

After being solely a practioner for two years, I was presented with the opportunities to earn my Pilates certification and teach - and took them! I began teaching in 1998 and since then from training, to injury, performance, to teaching, to retirement from dance, professional pivots, and the good ole' aging process, the constant has been Pilates.

OK, let's move!
